The Avengers Quilt: Traditional Quilting with Fandom Fabric
One of my favorite things to do is to look at a quilt pattern made with floral fabric and imagine it in a different way. I loved my grandmother. But I don’t love floral designs the way that she did.
There are so many fabrics out there that are designed for whatever fandom you belong to: Marvel, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Disney, and so many more. But there still seems to be a divide between most quilting patterns (still so many florals) and what nerds are making. I love to combine the two.
This Avengers quilt is possibly my proudest moment so far of re-interpreting a pattern to use fandom fabrics.
The original pattern is the Squared Corners baby quilt by Annie’s designs. They made it with tons of florals.
But I needed to make a quilt for a baby boy whose father loves all things Marvel. We became good friends before the movies started coming out and until I met him I had no idea that adults still read, collected, and obsessed over superhero comics. I knew they read graphic novels, but had no idea that they followed Iron Man and Captain America. (I’m so glad that the movie execs weren’t similarly ignorant.)
I found this fabric at Fabric.com and went to my local quilt store to find fat quarters to finish the blocks. Then I followed the pattern to make a quilt with a completely different look and feel from the original.
What I love most about this quilt is that the family received a homemade gift – but one that they will actually put to use because it fits what they love.
